Shutting down DVD/CD player repaired. Model: LG
LHC6231
This machine is two players in one.
This is also a VHS tape player. The main problem with this machine was, shutting down in a few minutes
time.
The DVD/CD section was playing ok and you can see that in the
photo.
From experience in this kind of machines, shutting down makes me think of either bad capacitors,
or cooling device failing. As I looked on the board, I could not see any bulged capacitor but I saw one thing
that got my attention and it was the main cause of this problem.
This is the amplification section of this machine. Under the black cover, the amplification
transistors are found and nothing was wrong with them except, they were getting over heated simply because
the fan that was suppose to cool them down, was not spinning.
I turned the power on and I measured the power at the fan sockets and guess what? There was no
reading on it whatsoever. The moment I put the red probe to the red wire and to ground using the machine
metal part, I could read 12 volts. The main problem was, this fan was not getting any power to operate
therefore the machine was shutting down due to overheating.
I did a small test. I am not sure if you can see the tiny wire that is connected from the white
screw to the black ground wire in the socket. The moment I did that, the fan started to spin and it was not
shutting down any more.
I soldered a wire from ground in the socket and soldered to the body of the tuner of this
machine. (Sorry I forgot to take a photo of it) it is a very simple fix yet brought the machine back to life.
I connected the machine to my TV set and played a movie for about
an hour; the machine did not go into shut down. I kept feeling the amplification transformers with my finger
to make sure they were not hot. They were getting the normal operation heat but not overheating. That put a
smile on my face and brought joy to my customer. Mission accomplished.
